Radar Technologies

Radar systems are a payload technology that transmit electromagnetic waves, and can detect objects by measuring at what point those waves are reflected back to the system. Relatively cost-effective, radar is useful for continuous real-time coastal surveillance. It can be installed on a variety of platforms including buoys, ships, aerostats, and other aircraft. The higher the radar is physically placed, the greater range it typically has, and thus it is especially useful when equipped to aircraft or even a tall mast.

Synthetic Aperture Radar

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) produces high resolution images and is a payload technology that needs to be attached to a moving platform, like a satellite or aircraft. The forward motion of the platform stimulates the receiving capabilities of a larger antenna (for greater range), while the SAR sends successive radar pulses to the ground. The radar pulses bounce back from the target to the SAR in the form of echoes. SAR images are then generated from a combination of these echoes. SAR is great for maritime surveillance because it can operate regardless of cloud cover, bad weather, or darkness. It is multi-use and applicable to non‐cooperative ship detection, as well as detecting oil slicks or other pollutants.

COSMO-Skymed Satellite Constellation

E-GEOS provides satellite imagery from the COSMO-SkyMed satellite constellation. This constellation consists of four satellites equipped with synthetic aperture radar.
