RQ-20A Puma All Environment
The RQ-20A Puma All Environment (Puma AE) is a small, hand launched AUV designed for land and maritime operations. The RQ-20A Puma AE's small size and quiet engine make it a popular choice for clandestine missions and serves as a viable option for patrolling MPAs.
All about the options: The central design component to the RQ-20A Puma seems to be flexibility to suit many different missions. It is waterproof and designed to land in water to be manually retrieved, making it ideal for surveillance of vast maritime spaces. It is battery operated so does not require take off or landing gear, and it carries a payload of electro-optical/infrared cameras with the option to add additional sensors.
First in line: The Puma AE had the distinction of being the first commercial UAV flown over land, when it deployed in June 2014 over Alaska to assist in an oil spill response. The National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration and branches of the US military have contracted with the RQ-20A Puma for various surveillance purposes, and the US Coast Guard used the UAV to assist in an ice-cutting mission in the Arctic.
