SMART Conservation Software

SMART (Spatial Mapping and Reporting Tool) was developed in 2013 by a consortium of nine conservation organizations, largely with a focus on combatting the illegal terrestrial wildlife trade. SMART is data collection software that allows rangers to input poaching data on their smart phones, which the software then converts into maps and other visual displays - use this information to track patterns and plan strategic responses.

Now you're speaking my language: The system is composed of various open source software components and is currently deployed at 140 sites in 30 countries. The system is available in ten languages and is compatible both with on and offline GPS devices. The SMART software package also includes a desktop version.

Maritime use: Originally designed for terrestrial environments, SMART has been deployed in its first maritime environment in 2016 in Belize's Port Honduras Marine Reserves.
